ArcheAge Chronicles: playing solo, guilds and endgame

ArcheAge Chronicles: playing solo, guilds and endgame

On 1 August 2025, Alessio Palumbo, senior gaming editor, published on Wccftech an interview with XLGAMES about ArcheAge Chronicles. The studio put first that playing solo should feel as good as going in a group. From that conversation also come the guilds, the PvE endgame and structured PvP.

Our own summary of the interview that Alessio Palumbo (Wccftech) conducted with XLGAMES on 1 August 2025. The full questions and answers are in the original, in English.

Playing solo, and what the guild is for

In August 2025, a session alone had to be worth as much as one in company. The guilds of ArcheAge Chronicles were about seeing one another, working together and moving forward, not about power: no mass PvP and no conquest. Dungeons, trade, crafting or a circle to call home. There was room for a few friends or for large communities, with resources and achievements, without locking content. Sizes and advantages, for near launch.

“One of our key goals is to make Chronicles a game that feels just as good solo as it does with a group.”

— XLGAMES, in the interview with Wccftech

Endgame for 2 to 5

The endgame of ArcheAge Chronicles was PvE: exploration, challenge and progress, not enormous raids or a PvP close. Small-group dungeons, instanced for 2 to 5 people, approachable and with difficulty. Story, bosses, environment and gear, with blows you can read, dodge, block, combos and position.

After the story, crafting, trade, lifeskills, housing and exploration continued: a profession, gear, rare recipes, world bosses and secrets. Several paths, with no second shift and no fixed schedule. Gear and loot, for later. The journey did not end at the credits.

The class, in your hands

There were levels, classes and skills. Each class brought weapons, a tree, a rhythm and controls, on a controller or on keyboard and mouse: combos and charges, or blocks, parries and dodges, on a trigger or a direction. Prowess counted as much as level or gear. Two of the same class might not look alike. There were not dozens of slots. The number of weapons and of active skills was not given.

Trade runs, ships and the house next door

Trade runs continued, alone or with others, with goods between regions. The scale fitted action combat and anyone who does not go on a raid or into a PvP blockade. Risk and travel stayed, as did sailing, crafting, housing and progression.

Under the name ArcheAge 2 there had been talk of towns with friends, guild towns and routes solo, in a party or on a raid. In August 2025 what remained were shared spaces, neighbourhoods and persistent zones, not player cities or classic territory. Neighbours, or crossing paths in trade and crafting. Less land owned and more expression, without the race for the plot. The house should feel like a place in the world.

What was not coming back

Wccftech presented it as an online action RPG, with 2026 in sight on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X, and with public tests that were going to be expanded. Almost a year earlier, XLGAMES and Kakao Games had shown it as a turn away from ArcheAge 2, the sequel that the 2013 sandbox would have been. Mass PvP and conquest were on the way out, for a PvE audience.

“But Chronicles isn't trying to be ArcheAge 1.5.”

— XLGAMES, in the interview with Wccftech

Not every system from the original was coming back, and not only because of the action combat: they wanted something easier to get into and more individual, without letting go of what made ArcheAge special. The first game was a dense sandbox, hard without time or without a group. Large-scale PvP and conquest did not come in by force. A character's world, story and flexible online. They shared the fondness for the big systems and left a path for anyone who missed the sandbox. It would not be the last visit to the ArcheAge universe.

The crime system, noted in a development diary, was left without a write-up. They wanted a world that responds to the player, without copying the justice of other games. The how, in August 2025, was not told.

PvP you opt into

There was PvP, far from the open chaos and the sieges of the first game: controlled, structured and opt-in, so as not to split the session of someone who comes for adventure, crafting or PvE. Arenas, battlegrounds or events by zone, with no closed list and not everyone against everyone. Short clashes, of execution. Matchmaking and rewards, for later.

“The philosophy is simple: PvP should feel like a choice, not a punishment.”

— XLGAMES, in the interview with Wccftech

If you prefer the challenge, there was room for it. Story, crafting and exploration went on without that toll.

What the studio has said since is in the producer Q&A.
